• How climate change has impacted your life
• The extent it has impacted your life, and those around you
• Measure taken to prevent/limit climate change
• Scenes (i.e. photographs of the natural environment)

Each participant may enter one photograph into each category.

Terms and Conditions:

1. Photographs entered must be original taken by the submitter
2. Photographs must be of original concept and idea, and must not have won any other competitions
3. Photos must be available for printing upon asking size (20cm X 25cm) and of high resolution.
4. No information written on the printed photo. Captions accepted.
5. Photographs cannot be withdrawn from the competition once entered
6. The Green Initiative reserves the right to use the photographs without the consent of the photographer.
7. Photographs must be emailed to green.initiative.admin@gmail.com (see format below)
8. The photographer must be aware that an exhibition may be held (October 2009) displaying the entered photographs. The Green Initiative reserves the right to sell these photographs as the event will be a fund raiser
9. The deadline for submitting the photos is September 1, 2009.
10. Submitors must be residents of Kuwait, aged 12-18

1. What is an International Climate Champion?

There are currently 600 International Climate Champions in 14 different countries recruited by the British Council through an annual recruitment process.  Each year, the British Council is expanding its network of International Climate Champions and ultimately aims to have thousands of Champions across the world all working together to make a positive contribution to tackling climate change.

This year, the British Council is launching International Climate Champions in the Middle East and is looking to recruit exceptional young people aged 18-25 who:

• Can carry out a climate change project* in their community
• Want to network and engage with like-minded young Champions from around the world, sharing ideas and best practice
• Represent the youth of your country on climate change.

*Projects with an international dimension will be particularly welcome.  

Project proposals can be put together by a team but one person should take responsibility and put him or herself forward as Climate Champion.

Applications from aspiring International Climate Champions programme are now being sought and the successful applicants will be announced and will start their ‘year in office 2009/10′ in June 2009.

2. What kind of person makes a good Climate Champion?

You have to be:

• A permanent resident of Kuwait
• Between the ages of 18-25
• Bilingual in Arabic & English
• Passionate about the environment and climate change
• Have a basic knowledge of the facts behind climate change
• Be enthusiastic and show determination to make a difference
• Happy talking in front of others and the media (don’t worry; we’re not looking for professional TV celebrities!!)
• Able to travel
• Able to commit to attend events in the following periods:

-    Interviews 27^th May to 2^nd June

-    1^st workshop 22 & 23 June 2009 : Project Skills Development (finalisation of project proposal)

-    2^nd workshop October 2009 : Communication Climate Change  

-    Showcasing/communication event end of March 2010

3. How do I enter?

If you think that you have got what it takes to make people sit up and combat climate change, then we want to hear from you!

You have got until 21 May 2009 to enter, so there is no time to lose – follow the three stages below:

1. Put your project idea together: the first thing you need to do is come up with a project idea that clearly shows how you can, on a large-scale, encourage your friends, family, school, university, colleagues at work or community to take positive steps towards tackling climate change.

Your project can focus on either:

• Raising awareness of climate change
• Limiting the impact of climate change (adaptation)
• Reducing our carbon footprint (mitigation)

If you can think of a way of including an international element or dimension, so much the better!

B.   Complete the Entry Form:  Send an email to climatechampions@kw.britishcouncil.org and we will send you the entry form.

Once you have produced your project idea, you then need to fill out an Entry Form.  You will have up to 350 words telling us:

• Why it is important to address the issue of climate change in Kuwait?
• What you can do to tackle the issue of climate change effectively in Kuwait (Demonstrate that your project idea is well thought out, planned and has a huge impact)
• Your project’s aim
• How you will implement your project
• What your project will achieve (the impact and lasting legacy)
• How your project is sustainable

     C. Send it in!  Once you have completed your entry form all that is left for you to do is to send it to us.  The closing date for entries is 21 May

4. What happens after I have entered the competition?

Your entry will be sent directly to the recruitment panel, who will assess your entry.  The most outstanding applicants will be invited to attend the semi-finals which will take place at the 27^th May -2nd June 2009.  At the semi-finals you will be asked to participate in an informal 20-minute feed-back session with the judging panel. The judges will then select the most promising International Climate Champions who will be announced on 5 June 2009 – World Environment Day.

5. What do I gain?

If you are one of the lucky five Climate Champions you will:

• Be provided with up to £1,000 to implement your project on climate change in Kuwait.
• Be equipped with effective project management and communication skills by participating in regional training workshops.
• Increase your understanding and knowledge of climate change by having opportunities to engage with international and regional specialists.
• Receive invitations to attend local, regional and possibly international events on climate change.
• Have the opportunity to network and engage with similar-minded Champions from around the world.
• Have the satisfaction that you have made a positive contribution to tackling climate change.

I’d just like to correct something on here, I (Yara al-Wazir) am NOT a Kuwaiti, I am a Palestinian-Australian who lives in Kuwait. No disrespect to Kuwaitis, my best friend is a Kuwaiti, but I’m a Palestinian-Australian

One person said there was a match between Italy and England, and that climate change wasn’t going to get in the way of them watching the match. Here’s a suggestion; instead of each family powering their 42″+ flat screen Viera to watch the match (Carbon Footprint of 1.6 pounds/6 hours), how about gather around one TV and watch? Another person said “no seriously 1 hour isn’t gonna change the world…” The point of Earth Hour wasn’t to change the world as much as it was to raise awareness.

That’s not the point of this post, however. Going green is cheap, very cheap. With news about the economic crisis dominating TV screens more than LiLo ever did; we now know the value of money. Here’s something I came across a while ago, maybe money will be enough of an incentive for you to turn green:
